Glossary

To keep JOSMs interface easy and consistent its vocabulary needs to be easy and consistent too. Also the Translations benefit from a plain terms.

The glossary has the sections Interface, Data, Verbs

Source Translation Hints
Interface
Mapview The main part of the screen as an area. Don't confuse with the map view as result of the map data displayed under the current map paint style.
Main toolbar Also shorter as toolbar.
Edit toolbar Has enter buttons in its upper group and toggle buttons in its lower group.
Sidebar Contains several panels, formerly called ToggleDialog.
status bar Below the Mapview
panel Docked in the Sidebar or floating free. Has panel buttons at the bottom, formerly called window or dialog.
dialog A modal screen element to display a warning or set a preference. The Relation editor and the Changeset Manager are non modal windows.
button A panel has panel buttons. Elsewhere called symbol.
working mode Entered by shortcut key or with an enter button.
working layer The map data layer holding the selection, also called edit layer or current data layer.
active layer Only equal to the working layer when it is a data layer.
selection Objects on the working layer which have been selected or searched for.
shortcut key Also called keyboard shortcut.
entry Part of a list.
item Mostly as menu item.
Data
tag A key and value pair for an object, elsewhere called attribute

object In JOSM one of the OSM elements node, way or relation, elsewhere called data primitive

way The straight variant of a way without curves is a line.
relation
member Reference in a relation to another object.
element Not used in JOSM, see object and member.
membership Property of an object being referenced from a relation?
referrer
track In JOSM GPS track For raw GPS data tracks are used. We here talk always use GPS-Track.
version 1. The object version is a numeric property of an object.
2. If an object exists in several instances and these instances have differences, then the object has several versions.
tagging
outside of the world outside of the downloaded area
note Notes are placed by other OSM users.
preset Also "tagging preset" is a Catalog of object types, also called tagging preset.
validator
map paint style Styles sometimes called map paint styles.
preferences The Preferences dialog has the pages Display preferences, Connection, and more. Each page may have some tabs.

plugin Extension for JOSM.
Verbs
to select Like "to select map objects for the Selection". Avoid this verb elsewhere when not referring to an object on the map.
to choose and to mark Like "to mark an entry" and "Show/Hide the chosen layer."
to search Result of a search is a new Selection
to look … up To "Lookup" objects in a list (Validation Results, Relation Members, Relation panel etc.). A successful look chooses objects. Avoid sentences like "Select the selected objects."
to browse The Presets catalog is browseable by text search or by menu structure
to move Like "to move map objects to a new position" and avoid this verb elsewhere
to shift Like "Shift tags from ways to relations"
to pan Like "to pan the map"
to open / to close Like "to close a dialog box"
to show / to hide For handling other GUI elements. If a button has a check mark which positively indicates a visibility, then its tool tip should begin with "Show ..."
