To keep JOSMs interface easy and consistent its vocabulary needs to be easy and consistent too. Also the Translations benefit from a plain terms.

Source Translation Hints
Mapview The main area of the screen. Inside it the map view is displayed as result of the visible map data under the current map paint styles. Mapview is one uppercase word.
main toolbar Also called as toolbar or symbol bar.
edit toolbar Has switch buttons for working modes in its upper group and toggle buttons for panels in its lower group.
Sidebar Contains several panels, formerly called ToggleDialog.
status bar Below the Mapview
panel Docked in the Sidebar or floating free. Formerly called window or dialog. Has panel buttons at the bottom.
dialog A modal screen element to display a warning or set a preference. The Relation editor and the Changeset manager are non modal windows.
button Sub forms are panel buttons, switch buttons and else. Elsewhere called symbol.
working mode Switched to Entered by shortcut key or with an enter button.
active layer A state of a layer. Has the green circled check mark in the layers list. If it is a data layer, then this one is the working layer too.
data layer A layer type. Holds map data and KML or GPX traces. Other types are for imagery, nodes, validation results, markers etc.
working layer A state of a data layer. The one data layer which is target of the actions. Formerly called current data layer.
Selection Objects on the working layer are selected. Same as "currently selected objects".
keyboard shortcut Also shortcut key.
entry Part of a list.
item Mostly a menu item.
preferences The Preferences dialog has the registers Display preferences, Connection, and more. Each register may have some tabs.
tag A key and value pair for an object, elsewhere called attribute
object In JOSM one of the OSM elements node, way or relation, elsewhere called data primitive
node elsewhere called point
way The straight variant of a way without curves is a line.
member Reference in a relation to another object.
element Not used in JOSM, see object and member.
membership Property of an object being referenced from a relation?
referrer Objects which are referred to, like nodes of a way or child relations.
map data Can be OSM data and Raw GPS data. (Todo: Sub classes)
OSM data Objects from the OSM server.
GPX track Todo: Sort out if GPS track, GPS trace, GPX track or GPS trace or even Raw GPS data is the best term.
GPS trace Todo: Check if equivalent to GPX track. Differentiate to export data?
version 1. The object version is a numeric property of an object.
2. If an object exists in several instances and these instances have differences, then the object has several versions.

outside of the world beyond the boundaries of the downloaded map data
note Notes are placed by other OSM users.
preset Also "tagging preset" is a Catalog of object types, also called tagging preset.
map paint style Styles sometimes called map paint styles.
plugin Extension for JOSM.
to select Prefer for objects on the map, like "to select map objects for the new Selection". Avoid this verb elsewhere. Unfortunately used for nearly everything in JOSM in the past.
to mark For objects in lists, like "to mark an entry" in a sidebar panel.
to choose For choosing something which is not a map object, like "Show/Hide the chosen layer."
to search For searching map objects, result is a new Selection.
to look … up To "Lookup" objects in a list (Validation Results, Relation Members, Relation panel etc.). A successful look chooses objects. Avoid sentences like "Select the selected objects."
to browse The Presets catalog is browseable by text search or by menu structure
to move Like "to move map objects to a new position" and avoid this verb elsewhere
to shift Like "Shift tags from ways to relations"
to pan Like "to pan the map"
to open / to close Like "to close a dialog box"
to show / to hide For handling other GUI elements. If a button has a check mark which positively indicates a visibility, then its tool tip should begin with "Show ..."
to draw for painting parts of the user interface on the map view, like to draw segment numbers". And for using the draw mode.
to display / to conceal For handling map data with filters and map paint styles.
to switch For working modes, like "to switch to draw mode"
