Edit Toolbar
The Edit toolbar consists of two parts to
- choose the active Working mode⤓ (upper buttons) and
- toggle each panel inside the ToggleDialogs with one of the buttons in the lower part.
The bar and its buttons can be hidden⤓.
Working modes
The Working mode determines what will happen when the mouse is clicked in the Map View. Therefore at all times exactly one Working mode is active in JOSM.
The different Working modes are activated with their Keyboard shortcuts. Additionally an activations is possible with the Edit toolbar buttons. But a Working mode can be active too even when his button is not shown.
The Working modes have separated mouse pointer icons and information texts Status bar.

Only three modes are initially shown. This can be changed by customizing the Edit toolbar and additionally by enabling Expert view.
There might be more buttons depending on the installed plugins:

Context menu
The edit toolbar is usually visible at the left side of JOSMs interface but it can be hidden.
When you right click on an button in the edit toolbar, you get the following options:

Hide edit toolbar | Hides the edit toolbar. It can be restored via the View menu. |
Do not hide toolbar | If checked, the keystroke TAB will not toggle the edit toolbar.
