Glossary
To keep JOSMs interface easy and consistent its vocabulary needs to be easy and consistent too. Also the Translations benefit from a plain terms.
The glossary has the sections Interface, Data, Verbs

| Mapview | The main part of the screen as an area. Don't confuse with the map view as result of the map data displayed under the current map paint styles. | |
| Main toolbar | Also shorter as toolbar. | |

| Sidebar | Contains several panels, formerly called ToggleDialog. | |
| status bar | Below the Mapview | |
| panel | Docked in the Sidebar or floating free. Formerly called window or dialog. Has panel buttons at the bottom. | |
| dialog | A modal screen element to display a warning or set a preference. The Relation editor and the Changeset Manager are non modal windows. | |

| working mode | Entered by shortcut key or with an enter button. | |
| working layer | The map data layer holding the selection, also called edit layer or current data layer. | |

| Verbs | ||
| to select | Prefer for objects on the map, like "to select map objects for the new Selection". Avoid this verb elsewhere. Unfortunately used for nearly everything in JOSM in the past. | |
| to mark | For objects in lists, like "to mark an entry" in a sidebar panel. | |
| to choose | For choosing something which is not a map object, like "Show/Hide the chosen layer." | |
| to search | For searching map objects, result is a new Selection. | |
| to look … up | To "Lookup" objects in a list (Validation Results, Relation Members, Relation panel etc.). A successful look chooses objects. Avoid sentences like "Select the selected objects." | |
| to browse | The Presets catalog is browseable by text search or by menu structure | |
| to move | Like "to move map objects to a new position" and avoid this verb elsewhere | |
| to shift | Like "Shift tags from ways to relations" | |
| to pan | Like "to pan the map" | |
| to open / to close | Like "to close a dialog box" | |
| to show / to hide | For handling other GUI elements. If a button has a check mark which positively indicates a visibility, then its tool tip should begin with "Show ..." | |
