Edit Toolbar

The Edit toolbar has two parts to

• choose the active Working mode⤓ with the upper buttons and
• toggle each panel inside the ToggleDialogs with one of the lower buttons.

The bar and its buttons can be hidden⤓.

Working modes

The Working mode determines what will happen when the mouse is clicked in the Map View. Therefore at all times exactly one Working mode is active in JOSM.

The different Working modes can be activated with the buttons in the upper part of the Edit toolbar or with Keyboard shortcuts.

	Select mode	S to toggle from lasso tool	Move, rotate, scale and select objects
	Select mode (Lasso)	S to toggle from "Select mode"	select objects within a handdraw region
	Draw mode	A	Draw nodes and ways. Press A again to enable/disable the Angle snapping function
	Zoom mode		Zoom with a rectangle
	Delete mode	Ctrl+Delete	Delete nodes or ways
	Parallel mode	Shift+P	Make parallel copy of ways
	Extrude mode	X	Create areas by extrusion or move parts of areas
	Improve Way Accuraccy mode	W	Optimized tool to improve geometry of ways

Only the three modes at the top of the table above are initially shown. This can be changed by customizing the Edit toolbar and by switching to Expert view mode.

There might be more buttons depending on the installed plugins:

	​Align Ways mode	Shift+N	Make ways parallel
	measurement mode		Measure distances
	​edit gpx tracks		Delete trackpoints of gpx tracks
	​Contour Merge		Merge and align the contours of areas. More infos at Contour Merge.
	​Adjust photos		Move photos to adjust their geolocation
	​FastDrawing	Shift+F	Tracing forests, rivers, lakes, twisted roads etc. Without clicking A button or left mouse click too much. More infos at Fast drawing.
	​Draw Buldings	B	Rectangular objects and/or basic shape of most man made objects. More infos at Draw building.

Context menu

The edit toolbar is usually visible at the left side of JOSMs interface but it can be hidden.

When you right click on an button in the edit toolbar, you get the following options:

Text	Description
Hide this button	Buttons can be restored with the button at the bottom of its section in the edit toolbar.
Hide edit toolbar	Hides the edit toolbar. It can be restored via the View menu.
Do not hide toolbar	If checked, the keystroke TAB will not toggle the edit toolbar.
