Para agregar más estilos a su lista, abrir las preferencias de estilo de mapa haciendo clic en el botón 
Ajustes en el diálogo de estilo de mapa.
Supongamos que usted está interesado en los mapas del mar, entonces es probable que haga uso del estilo "SeaMap FreieTonne": Basta con resaltar esta entrada en la lista de "Estilos disponibles" haciendo clic sobre ella y presionando botón

Crea tu propio estilo
¿No te gusta el estilo estándar? Cambialo a tu gusto:

Los archivos de estilo con diferentes formatos son compatibles, pueden ser cargados al mismo tiempo.
Haga que su estilo esté disponible para otros usuarios
- Cualquiera puede editar esta página wiki y añadir las direcciones URL para archivos de un nuevo estilo a la lista en la parte superior.
- O crear una página wiki similar a Styles/Maxspeed (XML) o Styles/Modified (MapCSS).

Manipulación de iconos
Existen diferentes formas para manejar los iconos:
- Los iconos distribuidos con JOSM se pueden introducir directamente con la ruta (relativa al directorio interno de imágenes de JOSM).
- Utilice una ruta relativa al archivo de estilo local.
- Nuevos iconos pueden ser directamente referenciados usando un http-link. Estos se descargan y almacenan en caché internamente.
- Desde la versión 2289 de JOSM los archivos ZIP son soportados.
- El archivo zip debe contener al menos un archivo con extensión XML.
- Los nombres de icono y la ruta es relativa al directorio zip más alto.
- Si hay varios archivos XML, un archivo con "style" en el nombre es preferible (para permitir estilos empaquetados y ajustes preestablecidos en un solo archivo).
- Cuando el wiki de JOSM se utiliza para el diseño de nuevos estilos, usted tiene algunas opciones adicionales:
- Cada archivo adjuntado a la página wiki es automáticamente incluido en el Zip descargado por JOSM.
- Si usted no desea un archivo en el archivo Zip, añada texto (NOZIP) en la descripción del archivo adjunto.

Procesamiento
Mappaint procesa los mapas de datos para que se parezcan mucho más a un mapa (colores, iconos, anotaciones, ...) - en comparación con el modo de vista en rejilla de JOSM.
Nodos
La mayoría de los nodos que corresponden a las etiquetas en las Características del Mapa mostrarán un icono apropiado, por ejemplo una "P" en fondo azul para amenity=parking.
Hay algunos iconos especiales para cosas faltantes/incompletas:
icono desaparecido
No tenemos el icono adecuado para cada etiqueta de nodo en las características del mapa aún, por ejemplo, iconos para la mayoría de etiquetas natural=xy siguen desaparecidos. Si se encuentra con un "icono desaparecido", no dude en crear un icono bonito de 16*16 píxeles que coincida con la etiqueta. Para enviar su trabajo, abra un nuevo ticket y añada su imagen o archivo zip como archivo adjunto.
icono de advertencia
La etiqueta correspondiente se utilizó alguna vez, pero ya no se recomienda para ser usada - o - no es adecuada para un nodo, por ejemplo highway=motorway simplemente no tiene sentido en un nodo. Probablemente no todas las etiquetas en desuso mostrarán este icono.
Vías
La mayoría de las vías que corresponden a las etiquetas en la página de características del mapa tendrá color especial, grosor y estilo de línea (por ejemplo, las líneas discontinuas para los ferrocarriles).
Areas
Las áreas son vías que forman una especie de anillo. La mayoría de las áreas que corresponden a las etiquetas en la página de características del mapa se llenan con un color especial (el relleno será transparente hasta cierto punto).
Preferencias Avanzadas
Puede utilizar las preferencias ocultas siguientes:
- mappaint.fillalpha
- "nivel de opacidad" alfa, que se utiliza para rellenar áreas. Un valor entero entre 0 (transparente) y 255 (sólido) con el valor predeterminado de 50.
- mappaint.fillareas (mostrar áreas)
- 10000000 (por defecto) - las áreas se llenarán con su color correspondiente y el nombre será mostrado
- 0 - las áreas estarán rodeadas solo por líneas y el nombre no será mostrado
- cualquier otro número - las áreas se llenarán con su color correspondiente y el nombre será mostrado en cualquier nivel de zoom por debajo del número dado en metros
- mappaint.showicons

- false (por defecto) - las vías tendrán la misma anchura en cada nivel de zoom
- mappaint.zoomLevelDisplay
- true - la visibilidad elementos depende del nivel de zoom
- false (por defecto) - todos los elementos se muestran
- mappaint.fontsize
- 8 - tamaño de los textos mappaint
