More sophisticated download of map data

Description

When creating new map I often need to download longer parts of road. I have to do this by pieces, where every bridge makes me do a new download because the way is split. I see 2 possible solutions:

1)
Include bridges when downloading roads (as a program option) - JOSM would recognize next connected object is a bridge and would continue tracing that object for and option of defined number or bridges.

2)
Allow filtering by tag for bbox area download. Like this, I would select an area and tell I just need way=highway and bridges.

You're talking about the "download_along" plugin?

No. This plug-in seems to be downloading an area within a given distance (to be honest I see no useful utilization of this function). What I want to do is make JOSM download all objects that are connected together (to a given "connection depth" that could be set). Like this, I would be able to reasonably download a way or river (that is split into more "ways" for whatever reason) that I need to use in a relation for instance.

Example: I need to use a part of road for boundary relation. There are 10 bridges in the piece of road I need to use and 9 pieces of normal way (highway=something) inbetween. In case the road is not a part of any other relation so that I could download it at once I have a teddious task waiting.

Current work needed to be done:
I have to manualy download the road in at about 10 steps. Because the road between bridges is quite long I do not want to download an area with all the extra data along - sometimes the area would even be too big to allow for download. So I go to bridge #1 - select an area of little more that the bridge #1 (so that a connected way #1 is partly included) and make download. The way #1 downloads but bridge #2 does not. I again select an area of little more that the bridge #2 and make download. The way #2 downloads but bridge #3 does not. And I repeat these steps untill I reach way #10.

Proposed workflow:
Number 1) or 2) as proposed above.

Next solution comes on my mind:

3) Basically the function described in 1) or 2) could be extended by allowing to download roads that are connected in a crossing to the main road. This would allow do download a road (or other) network to a given "connection depth" (an equivalent to link depth when browsing a website).

Ok understood, but I don't think this is something we will implement. Doing automatically selected multiple downloads is always a very dangerous task and there is nothing wrong with the way how you do it manually.

Sure there is nothing wrong with the long and tedious manual task, it only is bothering, long, tedious and absolutely not productive. This was just an idea how to make it a better user experience. I do not think that a careful implementation would be something very dangerous. You probably would only need to set a fixed maximum depth of connections or number of objects being downloaded at once.

I will probaby be using XAPI bbox search for data input as a temporary solution. But I guess I will have to manualy bother myself with bbox coordinates...

Waydownloader is another plugin to have a look at, but as long as #6314 does not get fixed it downloads to big areas, too.
