Hello
I use from time to time Id editor for ad-hoc change and I saw it uses a set of black and white icons for POI which is really nice, because of the clear contrast over the background, and they have a coherent looking, which could be better than the current icons that use different types of color scheme, shape, style.

There is already a mappaint style which mimics the iD rendering: wiki:/Styles/iD
However the icons are not yet replaced there. You can do this yourself if you want by editing this page. More documentation see wiki:/Styles.
I'm closing this ticket as the "infrastructure" is available and I don't think that one of the JOSM developers has time to do this.
