Description
It is not clear, e.g., in the case of a utility pole icon, where the
actual point lies. Does it lie at the base of the icon, as it would
seem, planted in the ground at that point? Does it lie in the center
of the rectangle covered by the icon? Does it lie to one side of the
icon as it does for the text string representing its name? Therefore
please consider also placing one additional glowing pixel or little X
or little + at the exact point where the point lies, in addition to
rendering the icon. Thanks. From users' Google experience, the tip of
the upside down teardrop is where it connects to the ground. But one
would like to be even more sure with JOSM.

You could:
- Just zoom in one or two zoom levels to get the same precision, or
- temporary disable the default mappaint style, or
- write an own little mappaint style, which you can enable in addition to the default style, which adds a "x" or "+" at the center position. It should not be very hard. See Styles and Help/Styles/MapCSSImplementation. But I think that will make most of the icons unrecognizable.

The center point of an icon even may not really be visible, when there are invisible areas on the icon side which moves the optiocal center away from the real center. As Klumbumbus said: If you want higher accuracy either create your own mappaint style or simply zoom in a bit.

Zooming won't help unless there are other features within the view to
orient with.
OK I figured out what the user can do.
- Enable wireframe mode.
- Put the mouse pointer upon the dot.
- Disable wireframe mode (CTRL+W, to avoid moving the mouse.)
Now he can see where within the icon the point lies, no matter what
kind of crosshair vs. pin etc. future icon style it is.
I believe the icon is centered on node coordinates. Writing it somewhere on the wiki to remove the ambiguity should be enough.
