Repeated hitting of "3" should keep on zooming on the selection.
Currently one must do "3+++++" (but after about five +'s the point
still slowly drifts off the screen. But at least it is more exact than
zooming with the mouse.)

This may seem convenient to you, but it is not exactly intuitive and unnecessary.

"3" can be used to zoom out as well. So in this case it is not clear what should happen after "33". Zoom out further? It is more intuitive when "3" always zooms and pans so the full selection is visible (as it is now).
