and

Is this additional node useful in any way beyond "silences validator"? If no, it may be better to improve validator rather than add many, many useless nodes all around the world.

Yes, as the node connects the two objects and as the two objects are on the same level and describe one feature in common they should be connected and not silently crossing. It should be the same with highway and amenity=parking though we do not have a key in common.
