Description
While translating JOSM on Launchpad I saw this in developer's notes to translators:
way : W : highway == * && name == /.* (Ave|Blvd|Cct|Cir|Cl|Cr|Crct|Cres|Crt|Ct|Dr|Drv|Esp|Espl|Hwy|Ln|Mw|Mwy|Pl|Rd|Qy|Qys|Sq|St|Str|Ter|Tce|Tr|Wy)\.?$/i
It would be good if we could translate that (and other expressions) to other languages on Launchpad (or other place/other way in JOSM). We can find a lot of them in http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Name_finder:Abbreviations
Unfortunately I don't know if this feature is still used in JOSM. I don't find it in JOSM preferences.

I agree with Simon, I mostly edit in France and use JOSM in English too :)
This wiki page is great material, I think we can use it to implement all other languages listed there and mark them as "implemented in JOSM" or something.
We could even imagine a quick fix replacing the abbreviation by the complete word ?

I'd suggest fixing the default situation first. JOSM in language X should contain abbreviations for language X (having english abbreviations too is a possibility too).
If then we want in JOSM language X allow the user to add his own abbreviations or choose preset strings for language Y, that would be a bonus, but probably much harder.

Translations don't have to modify the way the software works.
Adding new checks is (or should be) possible with the new MapCSS based validator engine.

I guess, it is easier to add abbreviations of other languages, for:
