Description (last modified by )
Would be nice to have JOSM offering the function of generating a GArmin Map which could be download to a Garmin device, from the element it has in memory (e.g. after download from OSM).
It would be quite handy when preparing your ride using OSM data using JOSM:
- download the OSM data of the area of interest;
- dram your route using JOSM using the OSM data as backgound
- download the map info to Garmin device
- download the route to Garmin device
Even a non routable map would do the job, but routable would be for use appreciated.
Go & ride thanks to OSM, and discover missing trails as you ride!!!!
Whatever the fate of this request, JOSM is a great tool. Thansk to all involved in its maintenance!!!

Just noticed this ticket for the first time. The main problem with this idea is that JOSM requires a huge amount of memory for a rather small area when you simply download all data. Even a single city like Bremen is too much. Calling mkgmap while JOSM is running means that you need even more memory though the memory footprint of mkgmap is rather small compared to JOSM. In the end, we would see lots of memory related problems in both programs.
I see no advantage compared to the simple solution in comment:3.
The program mkgmap has no functions to copy a map to a device.
Saying this as one of the very few maintainers of mkgmap and splitter.

I neither do remember this ticket, but still I think a garmin plugin might be useful. Think about mapping a neighbor hood or making special filtered layer where an overpass query is used.

What would that plugin do? It would save the data to a file, start mkgmap in background and return. The result is not usable in JOSM. So what would be the advantage? Everybody who uses mkgmap has already a working set of scripts to create his own map.
So, why not simply save the file manually and execute the existing script? What would be the benefit?

I was thinking about users not so familiar with executing scripts and maybe even not knowing mkgmap.
A plugin would help with:
- gui integration
- software installation
- providing (default) settings
- sharing settings with JOSM wiki

1) Seems what you really want is a gui for mkgmap, not a plugin for JOSM. mkgmap is a batch program. When I create a map for one of my summer cycling tours I start a simple script and go away for lunch. I really don't see a need for a gui. There is a frontend called Map Composer http://composer.waldpfa.de/ but for me it is much too complicated as it somehow hides the mkgmap logic of style files. The only acceptable gui for me would be one that creates a script, but Map Composer doesn't do that.
2) typical installation involves the download of two large files ( > 1GB and growing)
3) default settings are provided with mkgmap
4) no idea what that means.
That would mean that mkgmap had to be integrated. IMHO this won't happen.
My solution for your wish looks like this:
The only potential improvement would be a plugin doing the export and calling gpsbabel.
