sometimes using the sidewalks plugin across two ways at once causes an error

Description

What steps will reproduce the problem?

using the sidewalks plugin, enter sidewalk mode
place a node and, crossing two highways, place another node

What is the expected result?

for it to add two nodes where it crosses both highways, and tag them with highway=crossing.

What happens instead?

it sometimes does not create a node on one or both highways, or sometimes errors

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if possible.
