Link to Weekly OSM in startup notes?

Reported by: Stereo Owned by: team
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: Wiki content Version:
Keywords: Cc: Strubbl, weeklyOSM

Description

Considering that the JOSM startup notes have shrunk, that community is an important part of OSM, that OSM mappers are avid for community news, and that there is (still) not a very good way of getting project news on openstreetmap.org:

Would it please be OK for the OSM Weekly team to update the startup notes once a week to link to the latest WeeklyOSM? This would be in the appropriate language when possible, a bit like https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ca/2022-July/010457.html for English and https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ca/2022-July/010458.html for French.

Hi, I am Manfred aka derFred from the weeklyOSM team.

We want to report on JOSM more often, but the small team can’t keep on top of everything in the osm world. Please send us new versions, announcements, etc. to https://osmbc.openstreetmap.de/ and we will be happy to publish them.

Anyone can post a link there and also write a text. However, the editors reserve the right to adapt texts to our language guidelines, to shorten them or possibly not to publish them. For example, we never report on vandalism.

Hi, Sammyhawkrad pointed out that I must not have understood the question. :-(

If the suggestion was to feature weeklyOSM on the splash screen of JOSM, how could we implement that?

comment:4 by skyper, 22 months ago

I dislike mentioning weeklyOSM in the first section. It should be preserved for JOSM or really important OSM news. Rather I would prefer a link to WeeklyOSM in a section below plus can we please add a permanent link to the latest WeeklyOSM instead of adjusting the link every week, please.

comment:5 by Strubbl, 22 months ago

Unfortunately, as of now, there is no possibility to link directly to the latest weeklyOSM. E.g. the current one is https://weeklyosm.eu/archives/15732, but the last one was https://weeklyosm.eu/archives/15701.

comment:6 by Sammyhawkrad, 22 months ago

The weeklyOSM was added at the top to match the chronology of the news section.

comment:7 by Sammyhawkrad, 22 months ago

I did a simple test and I believe we can have a permanent link for the weekly publications since the language pages show the latest publication.
See these links:
https://weeklyosm.eu/en/en (double /en used here because a single one redirects to the previous non English page)
https://weeklyosm.eu/fr
https://weeklyosm.eu/de
https://weeklyosm.eu/ja

To avoid the weekly update of the wiki we can remove the date and issue number and add the link to the language name.

So the English version will be rewritten as "weeklyOSM: The weekly round-up of OSM news is now available online in English "

Removing the date and issue number makes it, I think, less interesting for a motd. The point of the motd is to inform about recent things, not act as a second wiki homepage - otherwise people don't read it anymore.

In other words, I really like the way it's been added now.

That is true but even for JOSM news.
How is your planed concept? Do you want to add a new item every week for all languages?
If I understand it correctly JOSM news would be moving down real quick and the most time on top would be not more than seven days. Currently, not many major changes or enhancement are made but that can change in the future.

In other words, I really like the way it's been added now.

I'd still prefer a permanent link below the JOSM news. Currently there are already some ways to get the info about a new version of weeklyOSM. People interested in regularly updates can use those.

The link to the previous week's Weekly would, of course, be deleted when the new one gets added to the news feed. Having tons of past Weeklies would indeed be spam and annoying.

+1 Currently it's top of everything with content not closely related to JOSM and not separated from JOSM things.

You would then lose the sorting by date which, I think, would make it less readable.

Instead of manually editing the page every week, a trac macro would be the proper solution.

I am still not happy with the position. Atm, JOSM news will only be on top between one day and one week. Considering the update cycle of JOSM plus the individual update cycle of the users, this is way too short.

Can we please find a better solution to have a prominent link to OSMWeekly below the JOSM news. Thanks.

Maybe a section called "OSM Community News" below the Remember the golden rules of OpenStreetMap section.

Reasoning:
I'd strongly prefer to move the News section below the Getting Started and Getting Help sections anyway. News is important, but it can be of variable length, potentially pushing the Getting Started/Getting Help sections off the screen, which is what new users need to see (they don't really need to see the entirety of the News section -- they would probably be OK if they only say the past month or two of changes, and the Getting Started section is probably what they ought to be reading first).

I have moved the weeklyOSM news below the JOSM news, we only added it at the top to fit in the date sequence.

We have permanent links to weeklyOSM for the different languages. We only edit the date and issue number weekly, if this could be automated with trac macro then we would gladly welcome your help with that.

I guess different user expectations collide here. As an experienced user I am mostly interested in JOSM changes and the version info, then weeklyOSM and at least the Getting Started section. Maybe the two sections Getting Started and Getting Help could be single lines with a link to wiki pages with more context.

As an experienced user, I also agree that I am mostly interested in the JOSM changes. But I'm also more likely to know where to look to see the bits I'm interested in for the MOTD.

With that said, one of the most common complaints I've heard is "I don't know how to start using JOSM". We have the very basics on the MOTD, but people don't read all of it. I'd have to do a survey, but they probably see News and then ignore everything else.

The order I would do:

  • Update checks
  • Getting started
  • Getting Help
  • JOSM News
  • Misc news

comment:19 by Strubbl, 21 months ago

IMO, the news should stay sorted by date but the news section can of course move.

@weeklyOSM
May you, please, use the localized date format identical to the JOSM news for the translations. The date in Dutch, for example, is currently wrong and corrected every week. Thanks
Additionally, there is a white space missing after the link to weeklyOSM in the Italian translation.

Hello.
Looked at your last changes at https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/StartupPageSource?action=history, but only saw the date update for NL. Added also the space for IT. Anything else?
Please take a look here:

Hi,
the date is a problem in several languages. With a quick glance at StartupPageSource, I noticed HU, NL, JA, RU, SK, SR ….

I take the blame if the date formats are wrong - I think that back then I tried to reproduce the other dates in these languages, but might have made mistakes.

Most of the ones @skyper has identified already have date templates, the others would have to be created at https://github.com/call-me-matt/weeklyOSMnotifier/blob/main/weekly2all.py#L256

Would it be possible for you to create a pull request for our template or email us (info@…) a to-be version so I can adapt our template accordingly?

the email address has been censored. it is: info@ weeklyosm.eu

wonderful, thank you, Strubbl. As soon as someone confirms here that the corrections are complete, I will merge. For those not familiar with github, take a look here: https://github.com/call-me-matt/weeklyOSMnotifier/pull/6/files

There is a third-party script running weekly that updates the OSM Weekly link. This fixes the original issue "[link] to Weekly OSM in startup notes".
