Using a 64-bit java version should automatically allow JOSM to use more memory. Maybe, you want to try our new JOSM installer for Windows including java 16.<<
??????????????????????

See Help/CommandLineOptions for memory settings.
The installer is present on the main page, but note that the documentation might be outdated and we got problem with automatic upgrades, atm, see #21307. E.g. Uninstalling the old installer and the old java runtime might be a good idea.

I am sorry, but this doesn't help me at all. This is just programmer's foreign language to me.
And why does JOSM not have proper memory settings by default?

I had exactly the same problems with the JOSM upgrading process, and now I have the problem, that some places in OSM are marked very green and I don't find the setting for disabling this.
But you still have the problem with the OpenWebStart installing process as well.
You pray to use OpenWebStart, but you don't tell me how to install or how to use after installing.

Can maybe someone tell me step by step what I have to do to let JOSM change the background again?
In 17917 it worked so far, but after upgrading it doesn't work anymore.
