#20536 closed defect (wontfix)

Make a GUI way to point JOSM to the right java version on Windows

Description

JOSM won't work for me because it cannot find the most up to date java version.

Other programs, such as Eclipse, let me, in the gui, tell it where to look for the runtime environment it needs.

The current, extremley hackey, non-computer scientist friendly, hacks to make JOSM find the JDK or JRE it needs are terrible. I"m afraid of changing system variables, which is not ok, especially since I have a "corporate" windows environment and each time I mess with the local admin privileges, I'm risking my own neck by changing things, and possibly making our system less resistant to malicious software!

Just because I can program a couple scripts in java doesn't mean I'm comfortable messing with system variables.

This is a chronic problem with open-source software - the developers assume the users are as expert as they are, also as expert at reading through cryptic forum entries and understanding all the jargon! Please DO NOT ASSUME THAT.

Please just give us a way to point JOSM to the correct java runtime environment from within the GUI.

OR, give us an explicit EXAMPLE josm.14j.ini file WITH COMMENTS that we can use to create our own .ini - which I assume is the file that the JOSM.exe will look at to figure out where the java version is. But the current links only show jargony "how tos" that DO NOT HELP ME if I'm not already familar with all the compsci stuff. Neither does the forum discussion that is linked.

Please, please, please, make this more accessible to non-computer scientists.

Thanks.

Sorry but we won't clutter JOSM GUI to configure your environment. You can use OpenWebStart to take care of that and get Java updates.

Just use a common Linux distribution and its package josm. No need to take of anything.
