The list of available background layers / images is getting bigger and bigger. Would it be possible to add a search function?

You can use parts of the source name, the country code (e.g. cz), the country name (e.g. czech republic, use the country name in the language JOSM is set to), the source category (photo, elevation, historicphoto, map, historicmap, osmbasedmap, quality assurance or other) or the URL.

Yes, I missed that. Sorry. I was looking for some filter function / filed like in MS-Excel typing the search phrase direclty underneath the column-title.
Maybe a little search icon (e.g. magnify-glass) near the text field might help.

There already is a search function (
Imagery->Imagery Preferences-> text field underneathAvailable default entries:). Is that what you were looking for?
