Move away from Transifex

Description

What does JOSM think about changing translation platform?

The current offering is not good for anyone, for any reason, and Weblate exists as a much better alternative.

In Merkaartor they seemed positive a good while ago, I thought it would be a good idea for everyone to
move, rather than to stay put for no other reason than the other OSM projects being on TX.
That seems to be the consensus across the board.

I opened a bug-report over at https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/issues/7508 because
it is the most user-facing alternative, and it too could really do with better coverage and
improved quality.

I think the best course of action would be to set up shop with an OSM account that has all the current TX projects in it, over at Hosted Weblate. https://weblate.org/hosting/ It is (optionally) gratis for libre software, as opposed to the strategy of TX.

JOSM is the editor of choice in OSM-NO btw. :)

We don't use transifex but https://translations.launchpad.net/josm/trunk/+pots/josm, but want to move away from Launchpad as it gives timeout errors most of the time e.g. when searching for strings. -> long story in #8645.

All web-based or "Online" translation systems have the disadvantage of slow response time to search queries. In recent years the situation at Launchpad had improved a little, so the need for a switch is not as urgent when #8645 was filed.

Please give the offline translation tool OmegaT a try. It's Java based and has very powerful and fast searches. These fast search responses can help to keep a translation consistent.

You can do offline translation with whatever tool you want already with Launchpad and Transifex and probably every other solution. That's off-topic, as plain offline-translation would prevent contribution from the majority of translators.
