I can't separate a path on a node

Description
What steps will reproduce the problem?
- select a way with multiple nodes
- select one of the nodes of the selcted way
- from the menu tool choose separate paths
What is the expected result?
to get 2 separate paths
What happens instead?
a red popup window appears in the bottom let corne claiming the selcted node is not attached to any path

I think what you want to do is called "Split way", the Hotkey is P. What you call "Split paths" (Unglue ways) is used when you have two ways which are connected in one node. Normally there is no need to mark both the way and the node. If there is a need, JOSM will tell you.

I like those bug reports with video and audio commentary :)
I think GerdP is right, you are searching for split way. Simply select the middle node and press P. After this you get two ways which are "glued" together on this node. You may use Unglue Ways (G) on this node then if you want two complete separate ways.
