#16526 new defect

Simplify Way on Polygon deletes it with very high values of error

Reported by: SK53 Owned by: team
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: Core Version: tested
Keywords: template_report Cc:

Description

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. Raise simplify.way.max.error to a very high level (say 100)
  2. Select a Polygon
  3. Choose Tools ... Simplify Way
  4. The Polygon disappears.

What is the expected result?

A polygon with fewer nodes (never less than 3) or a warning message that simplifying would delete the feature.

What happens instead?

The entire polygon disappears

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if possible.

In inadvertently used JOSM with a previously set very high simplify.way.max.error and was surprised to see polygons disappearing (I suspect I used JOSM with this setting when writing this blog post: http://sk53-osm.blogspot.com/2016/10/skeletons-in-water.html). Notwithstanding the high setting, I think a fundamental property of simplify way is that it should not delete the element, or at the least raise a warning message.
