Mapsforge as background

Sometimes I want to create "field notes" (modified GPS tracks, topology of ways, …) without Internet or downloaded data.

For that purpose it would be handy to have offline maps available. Mapsforge provides a Java library to render Mapsforge maps (and it's not limited to Android anymore). There is also a sample application available that demonstrates the integration in Java programs.

Although I used Mapsforge before, I have no idea how to integrate it into JOSM (as a plugin).
