Mapsforge as background

Sometimes I want to create "field notes" (modified GPS tracks, topology of ways, …) without Internet or downloaded data.

For that purpose it would be handy to have offline maps available. ​Mapsforge provides a Java library to render Mapsforge maps (and it's not limited to Android anymore). There is also a sample application available that demonstrates the integration in Java programs.

Although I used Mapsforge before, I have no idea how to integrate it into JOSM (as a plugin).
