Mapbox zoom close to ground function disappeared? — at Version 5

Dear whomever this may concern,
Did just the functionality of looking at pixelated mapbox imagery disappear? Now when zooming close to ground the image is replaced with a big X.
Version 8651.
I am in need of this function.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Open JOSM
- Open whatever location.
- Select Mapbox imagery
- Zoom in close to ground.
What is the expected result?
No X appears and pixelated image is shown.
What happens instead?
X appears.
