Confused installations in Ubuntu

Description

I have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I first installed josm using apt-get.

# apt-cache search josm
josm - Editor for OpenStreetMap
josm-l10n - Editor for OpenStreetMap - translation files
josm-plugins - Plugins for JOSM
#

But when I ran JOSM recently, it said I should upgrade. I upgraded via the JNLP file.

So, where exactly is the new copy of JOSM installed? The /usr/bin/josm executable that I have launches the old version again. So where is the new executable?

Finally I re-launched via the JNLP file again and this time locked the icon to the Launcher bar, because launching via the JNLP re-downloads a bunch of content.

Can the Linux installation methods be made compatible? It would be good to have some documentation on installing and launching JOSM specifically on Linux system, but there seems to be several ways to do things and these just sit next to each other? Hopefully they do not conflict with each other.

All the information should be available at the main page and the linked download page. Especially, the paragraph about Ubuntu mentions differences, as it seem that you did install the official package from Ubuntu and not the one from the JOSM repository.

Anyway, feel free to further develop the documentation. It is a wiki.

The jnlp version differs from the "normal" version.

The jnlp version is checked for changes each time you will start it (The method is also called "Web-Start" in Java slang). It will need a internet connection every time you will start it.

If you want to do stuff offline (maybe in a train with no internet connection or in a car mapping stuff) then the version from the repository is better - but you will need to update those reqularly via Synaptic (Please see the section about adding the JOSM-Repository).

They are by default not compatible and this is intended. You need to choose which version do you want and install it.

Hopes this helps!
