Description
An OSMLab repository have made a consolidated list of map layers, which already are in use by iD, Potlatch 2 and Vespucci, and maybe some other editors. There are tickets on some editors to include this list. I am currently using this list directly from http://osmlab.github.io/editor-imagery-index/imagery.xml, there are still a few minor differences between this list and the default list in JOSM, for example some of the layers are missing the country tag for sorting, though the most notable is that this list have a few more layers currently not present in the JOSM map list.
A very few are missing from the consolidated list, but as far as I have been able to detect, there already are pull requests to include these layers, meaning that when these requests have been evaluated for code structure, their list will be more complete. I feel that since the number of background layers are becoming very large, and the number of editors, it is good that this is consolidated in some way, such that when layers are changed (i.e. cover larger area, or withdrawn), than there is only one place to update for all the editors.

We will not switch to using this list. See related tickets and discussions for the reasons. I wont repeat them here.
