Josm occationally becomes unuseable - "can't add more ways mode"

Now and then josm switches to a useless mode where no more ways can be added. I can select, delete, and add tags to nodes and ways. I can add more nodes too, but I can't make new ways. When I click, josm just places nodes but no way connecting them. The only way out is to upload changes so far, quit and restart josm. This looses me lots of time - downloading the same area over and over.

This don't happen as long as I only make new ways or make the existing ones longer. It seems to occationally happen when I add a freestanding node (point of interest) or add a node into the middle of a way.

In this mode, adding another node into the middle of a way requires shift+click, unshifted click doesn't work the way it usually does.

It has been like this for a few weeks, as long as I have used josm. The latest version did not help. It happens with or without the mappaint plugin.

Versions:
Josm 484, java 1.6.0_03, on linux-2.6.22 on amd64.

I have noticed this too. Do you know of a concrete way to reproduce it?

Haven't been able to reproduce it purposefully, but I did find out a few things that may help to diagnose the problem:

-dragging a node also selects everything in the box between the node's initial position, and it final position
-adding a way using ctrl still works
-seems to usually occur once an upload has finished
