#7286 closed defect (wontfix)

copy past from one layer to another does not insert under cursor

Reported by: skyper Owned by: team
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: Core Version: latest
Keywords: copy past layer Cc:

Description

  1. copy an object (Ctrl+C)
  2. activate another layer and move to another area
  3. paste from buffer (Ctrl+V)

I expected the object to be inserted under the cursor but instead it is inserted as clone of the original.

This is a feature. Why is it a problem to move the objects afterwards?

comment:2 by akks, 12 years ago

Yes, it is a feature. It it much harder to place copy in the exactly the same position than to move it after copying.
If you want copies under cursor, just copy from the same layer.

No, it is not hard! Just

  1. select
  2. zoom to selection {3}
  3. copy
  4. change layer
  5. paste

In the wiki we could copy the note from duplicate to copy or even enhance duplicate to work with different layers (eg, paste selection of previous layer.

  • If I copy a node and want to paste it in different layers at different position, I always have to move them !
  • Moving over long distance needs several steps of moving and zoming in.
  • Last but not least, it is a totally different behaviour then pasting in the same layer and somehow confusing and irritating.

Personally, I'd stick with the current behaviour, too.

+1 for keeping this feature as it.

As I already wrote it used to work differently and now complicates copying from on layer to another where the old behaviour would still work and only needs one more action (zoom onto selection).
