Can't write certain polish native letters in tags values.

Hi,

With latest josm, on linux (and windows) with sun jvm 1.6 I can't write some names with certain letters. Such as ń,ś,ź. Others like ą,ł,ó,ę,ż,ć are OK (i hope you can see those letters correct here :)). Instead of those letters strange things are happening (whole line disappears or it's blocked).

Is this a problem of josm or just locale/environment settings?

Can you enter those letters in other java applications? JOSM does nothing fancy (except auto-completion) there, it pretty much just tells Swing to draw an editable drop-down list, and then gets the text back.

Could you please tell me what locale settings you're using?

Hmmm, I can also type these letters using an input method (scim-m17n with latin-post) in JOSM on both 1.5 and 1.6. No boxes, no unexpected behavior.

However I see some boxes when viewing the osm file in xterm. Unicode font configuration is hard work...

On Linux I have exported (set environment variable) to
declare -x LANG="pl_PL"
But on Windows it's default setting - and I don't have any idea what they are (i guess pl.ISO8859-2 or pl.WinCP-something ;))

I have now tried to set LANG="pl_PL.UTF-8" - the same result, but
there is slight change, I have bookmarked regions of OSM with polish letters in
names. After changing locales on UTF those names were corrupted.

But interesting thing - when I'v tried to set LANG="en_US.UTF-8" - i got message
"(<unknown>:17877): Gtk-WARNING : Locale not supported by C library.

Using the fallback 'C' locale."

Witch is of course true, since i have only generated locales for
pl_PL ISO-8859-2
pl_PL.UTF-8 UTF-8

And with such settings (LANG=C) JOSM can write all letters correct :) - I don't know
if this is appropriate reaction (I guess it's not) - but works for now :)

Oh btw. the problem with writing letters was/is not only in editing of tags values but
in entire josm/java - all file requesters etc. suffer the same thing.

No Josm issue. Either Java or system installation is defective.
