Remove split member of relation throws an error

I got this exception when editing a relation.

The steps as I remember them were:

1. make a relation
2. add a way to the relation using the "add selected" button
3. split the way
4. try to remove the way from the relation using the "delete" button

Note that I never clicked OK on the relation editor -- I'm guessing this causes something to go out of sync.
