Description
This is a couple of suggestions about the website:
I'm never sure about which version (snapshot or latest release) should I download. Now you have written a recommendation and I understand a little bit more, but the regular user shouldn't be aware of the software development process. Just show a link for regular users (Downoad Now) and another one for advanced users that can be reporting bugs (dev version)
The second request is that you put the version numbers visible. I regularly come to download the new JOSM editor version and I never know if I'm updated or not. I have to download and run it to see if I already have the last version.
Thanks!

With 3rd party plugins becoming more popular, removing the stable verion becomes unfeasible (can't request, that everyone updates all his plugins at once when I just change some minor thing everytime).
So updated the josm main page a bit and close this. Hope it is enough to clarify about versioning questions.
about the version number: Click on menu Help, then About. The version is the "revision number".
You also can browse to http://www.eigenheimstrasse.de/josm and choose your beloved snapshot from hand - josm-latest is always just an alias to the highest snapshot for convinience ;-)
about the confusion of having multiple versions:
The thing is, that I either would have to remove the release version at all or have to remove the send-bug-report feature from the release version or I will end in a flood of similar bug reports.
I tend to remove the release at all, but this would (at least mental) restrict me in doing larger but still necessary refactorings or changes as JOSM can be get a bit instable after those..
So maybe I should finally start concentrating on writing more tests... *sic* ;-)
