Description
Problem?
Sometimes the area I want to download is not large but because it extends e.g. south west to north east, the Bbox to fully fit it is too large to download. I then have to manually split it in multiple Bboxes and download each one separately still downloading much more than required.
This happens e.g. when I want to add new bus routes (maybe I'm just not doing it the most effitient way...) or any south-west->north-east road in a bigger city.
What is the expected result?
It would be great if the download window would allow me to draw a custom area. Honestly often it would already suffice to be able to rotate the bounding box...
What happens instead?
I have to draw a big Bbox, get rejected, then download it in multiple parts.

A simple solution is to draw a temporary line through the area that you want to download and then use File -> Download along (no plugin needed)
Edit: After download undo the steps to draw the temp. line.

Thank you for pointing me to that plugin (here is the link if other fall on this ticket: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/JOSM/Plugins/WayDownloaderPlugin ). It looks interesting but might need a bit of learning to master because its not 100% what I was hoping for.
I also found https://gitlab.com/Jamalek/josm-batch-downloader/ which is a bit closer to what I was searching for but I would still have to tile the area manually and then download all tiles in a batch. I wash hoping the tiling itself could be automated.

ah, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding! This is the built-in function you were referring to: https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Action/DownloadAlongWay
Thank you so much, that is very helpful!

That's not possible. The download area is always a rectangle and the size is server limited to prevent unnecessary server load.
JOSM offers different methods for download (e.g. the download_along plugin). Try if any of the others fits your needs better.
Automatic downloading is always a balance between server load and user comfort. Over the years we choose a balance between both which works ok for both sides.
