The tag is is documented on Tag:railway=derail.
There are currently (2023-06-13) 12279 nodes with this tag. See https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/railway=derail#overview.
It should be placed in presets/transport/railway, above "buffer stop".
Suitable combinations could be (like most of the other railway presets)
- ref
- operator
and maybe also
- railway:derail:local_operated=yes/no
(inspired by railway:switch:local_operated=yes/no)
I know that there already are 2116 existing derails with tag railway:local_operated=yes, but I guess that they REALLY should be railway:derail:local_operated=yes/no instead?

Ok,leave out the local_operated, but include ref and operator at least.
No, unfortunately I don't have an icon. I guess i could create one though. Are there any "rules for icons" I can read somewhere?

I added an icon now, see attachments. However, I am not sure how visible it is. A derail is a fairly small feature, and shrinked to 16px doesn't really help :-(
Yes, I forgot earlier: A derail should only be possible to select for nodes. Not ways or relations.

Oh, that's a nice icon, although I'm not sure if the derail feature is visible enough.
For testing, you can utilise the Styles/IconTester mappaint style.

I used the "rail.svg" and added the derail feature :-)
I know, that's the problem. If the icon shows a complete section of track, the derail will only be a few pixles at most. And if I would zoom in, it will look like a normal switch :-(
I'll look into the IconTester mappaint style.. tomorrow.

Note to anyone who is going to check the patch; the icon has a viewBox="0 0 15 16", it should be viewBox="0 0 16 16".
I'm not sure about the tagging. A simple preset with an icon is should be fine. Speaking about icon, @tomasmarklund do you have one ready to use?
