#22177 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Allow vending_machine on ways

Reported by: richlv Owned by: team

Description

JOSM currently warns about vending_machine on ways, and does not offer it in presets for ways.
"Reverse" vending machines for bottle and other item return often are large, walk-in structures that can be mapped as buildings - for example, https://www.mapillary.com/app/?pKey=3253357878275489 .
Vending machine in this case isn't a single point inside, it's the whole structure.
Could the warning please be removed, and vending_machine allowed in presets for ways?

-1: The building contains one or more vending machines, you don't walk into a vending machine (unless you are a service technician maybe)
Besides that JOSM just tests here what the wiki recommends.

A good point on the buildings possibly containing more than one "slot" (even if the machinery might be common behind them).
If there's a general agreement that it's a better way, please feel free to close this, and I'll be happy to expand the wiki as well.

Resolution: wontfix
Status: newclosed

As a general rule, I tend to follow OSM wiki tagging guidelines when changing/modifying presets (see osmwiki:Tag:amenity=vending_machine for the tag for this ticket).

I also have a tendency to ignore any recent(1) changes to the wiki absent discussion on the tagging mailing list or a proposal that was just voted on and was fairly well advertised.

In this case, if you feel that amenity=vending_machine should be allowed on areas, please start a proposal to change it. But you may want to read osmwiki:Talk:Tag:amenity=vending_machine#Vending_machine_as_area first.

With all that said, I have mapped "point" features as areas before (see https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1024199912 for an example), and I'd argue that small areas are the same as points, but that would increase the complexity of all software using OSM data.

@richlv: if you do get the wiki changed, and people onboard, feel free to reopen this ticket.

(1) I consider "recent" to be anything in the past year or two. This gives people who care enough time to notice that the wiki changed.

Thanks, there are different opinions on "voting", but regarding this particular request, it seems like the suggestion by GerdP is the way to go, at least in my usecase.
If things change, this can always be reopened.
Thank you for looking into this :)
