GPU at 100% not doing much, causes lag

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: team

Description

What steps will reproduce the problem?

If I load JOSM and place one node and move the cursor in small circles my GPU shows 100%. If I stop the GPU drops to 0%. Often when placing nodes the new way will lag the mouser click by half a second which is very frustrating. Other times there is no lag but once the lag is there it will not go away. CPU is at 5%.

Any assistance appreciated.

GT 710 is a low-end graphics card and JOSM makes intensive usage of GPU when rendering data. This is what you can do to improve the situation a bit:

  • always be up-to-date with your graphics drivers
  • always be up-to-date with JOSM
  • update to Java 16 here: https://adoptopenjdk.net/?variant=openjdk16&jvmVariant=hotspot
  • keep the number of JOSM plugins at a minimum
  • try to work on small datasets
  • reduce the number of map paint styles to a minimum
  • eventually if all of above is not enough, disabled rendering completely by working in wireframe mode (Ctrl-W)

Viewport Following can also have an impact on this. Would be the first option I would disable.
