Description
Testing a preset with some emojis (instead proper icons) I saw that the result is actually ugly:
Is it possible to have them displayed with color (specially) and more nitid?
If yes, it could save a lot of time to locate and adapt icons.

I failed to accomplish changing the font for JOSM.
Does it need some code/support in JOSM itself for this?

Java has no proper emoji support (yet?). See last Unicode enhancement (JEP 327: Unicode 10):
Non-Goals
Four related Unicode specifications will not be implemented by this JEP:
- UTS 51, Unicode Emoji
See also javabug:8172278. It seems JavaFX does not have emoji support neither.

Do you need special Java support? At least for other software it was enough to install the right fonts and do the font setup accordingly, so that the colored variants have been used instead of the uni-color ones of the original fonts. Don't know if Java does his own font handling here again.
Are there fonts which have colored emojis and text in one font?
That depends on your font settings.
