I believe it could help prevent coastline errors if the standard mappaint style showed coastlines the same or similar as water areas or riverbank areas: with a thick coloured transparent blue line towards the sea side.
left is coastline, right riverbank. Coastline should be displayed similarly as riverbank (show the direction where the water area is)

I just noticed it is already like this, but very subtle (small line), should be 2-3 times thicker (like riverbank or even more, maybe fainter/more transparent to be distinguishable)

The coastline should be distinguishable from closed and unclosed water areas. If we make coastline casing wider this results in several unwanted rendering problems:
