    44* write an own little mappaint style, which you can enable in addition to the default style, which adds a "x" or "+" at the center position. It should not be very hard. See [wiki:Styles] and [wiki:Help/Styles/MapCSSImplementation]. But I think that will make most of the icons unrecognizable.
