#14669 new defect
default map paint style does not recognize highway areas other than pedestrian
Reported by: | dieterdreist | Owned by: | team |
---|---|---|---|
Priority: | normal | Milestone: | |
Component: | Internal mappaint style | Version: | latest |
Keywords: | road area | Cc: |
Description
The name is drawn at the border and not at the center, no area rendering, unless the highway type is set to pedestrian. IMHO if area=yes is set it should place the name in area style in the middle. Also compare to carto-osm which does render road areas (basically squares with no restrictions)

I am fine with area:highway for street areas, this is not about street areas but about small squares in (mostly) small places, where you can go anywhere with your car/vehicle in any direction. This is different to big squares (where there are usually rules to say where to drive, and be it the general "stay on the right" in countries with traffic on the right)

highway=pedestrian is an exception. How streets should be mapped as areas is not yet really decided. In my opinion we should not use the same tags due to confusions for routing. Afaik the direction goes to area:highway=*, see
