Description
sometimes one might want to do some mapping by walking through a mapillary sequence. currently, every image is downloaded only when requested, which slows things down a lot.
it would be nice to detect that user has started on a sequence (let's say, pressed pgdown/nextimage two times ?) and preload the upcoming images - maybe next 10 or so.

No, only the metadata (excluding username and creation timestamp, that would require a lot more API requests, more precisely one per image). Actual images are only loaded when selecting them, plus two images before the selected image and two after.

This is now contained in the brand new release v1.5.8, which can now be downloaded via the plugin updater in JOSM's preferences.

By default, since v1.5.0 the plugin always downloads sequences as a whole, it won't cut sequences when they run outside the download bounding box.
