Description
I have been having an issue with JOSM for a little over a month regarding the preferences.xml file. Since August 15 (the last change date of the file), the preferences file is not able to save new and updated information. It is able to access the preferences file, as my JOSM setup is still opening properly, but I can't make any new changes to the arrangement of JOSM or add new imagery links. The cmd shell throws the following error "WARNING: Failed to persist preferences to '
BRO-S-NAS\home\xxxxx.xxxxxx\Application Data\JOSM\preferences.xml' (edited name from directory and status report, replaced with xxxxx.xxxxxx).

I checked the Windows permissions on the xml file, but there was no check in the read-only box. I went ahead and tried to edit the XML file, which was successful. On rerunning the .jar, It threw an XML error, backed up the old xml file, and created a new preferences.xml file. Opening the bad XML file, the editor flagged a couple bad characters, which happened to be the copyright circle both times. After cleaning out those two symbols and restarting the jar file, everything is up and running. I added a new WMS imagery link, then shut down JOSM to test that it is saving. Reopened JOSM one more time and the new imagery link was still there. So it looks as if everything is back to where it should be. Thanks!

OK. If you get this error again, please attach the XML file and reopen this ticket.
Are you able to edit the file manually? Looks like an access right issue with your NAS.
