Description (last modified by )
I am beta testing the next generation of Mac OS X, and have now a few times encountered a problem where the screen completely grays out (see attachment):
Without a deeper investigation this might be due to causes outside JOSM (problems in Java implementation, etc) but to capture your attention I report the problem here as well in the Mac Beta Feedback Reporting tool.
The times it have occurred with me have always been when opening the download dialog window. Both when no data have been loaded, and in the middle of edit sessions. It doesn't happen every time, this is about the 3rd occurrence in a week, and I am a heavy editor.
It doesn't seem like the download session has anything to do with it, as I use the continuous Download plugin with no problem.
It might be that a "refresh screen" type command in the download dialog, or something like that are acting strangely.
I never had this problem on OS X 10.9 Maverick, first time observed was first edit session in Yosemite.

It's clearly a problem between java and osx. Maybe java 8 has a different behaviour.

I'm downloading the Java8 installer, but seems like this is still early development (no download from java.com/download for example), I will hold a little bit before actually installing Java8 to see what apple is responding to the feedback I sent through the feedback assistant, and to get a rough idea how often this occurs.

Java 8 is far stabler than your Beta Operating System ;) 8u20 is the first version we could qualify of mature, and the next update will probably be the default version on java.com, see https://blogs.oracle.com/henrik/entry/java_8_not_just_for. A lot of OS X bug have only been fixed in Java 8, that's why I asked you to give it a try. It won't break your machine.

I will study this closer, there is a purpose for beta testing, and if it seems like OS X will move towards Java8 instead of Java7, than moving towards Java8 is sane in the beta testing, if they have any reason to continue using Java7, than I'll rather stay testing with Java7 (unless the problems make it too complicated for me)

Osx or apple has no word to say to java version since they finally agreed to let oracle lead java on their platform as it is the case on other systems. Believe me when I say that java 8 is globally better than java 7 for osx and that it will be soon the default version proposed by Oracle. Can you please give it a try, it's a matter of seconds. You can remove it after if you're really afraid.

Was reading a little about it on various forums and Mac Tech sites, and yes it seems like the solution advised by Mac technicians have been either a downgrade (to a Java6 installation, official patch by apple), or since 8u11 try Java8, with this I decided to try give Java8 a try, though haven't come around to actually run the installer yet.
The computer in question is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)

Ok thanks. By the way you can also test two versions of java 8: current stable version (jdk 8u20) and latest development snapshots of next major update (8u40-ea for "early access").

I have 8u20 already downloaded and ready to install when I have time, I can download 8e40-ea as well, though I do not know if time will allow me to do much testing of those. For sure will report any troubles if I get them.

Replying to Aun Johnsen <lists@…>:
though haven't come around to actually run the installer yet.
There's a bug in the installer, fixed in 8u20 for Java 8 but only in 7u71 for Java 7, which has not been released yet.

I've been running j8u40-ea and haven't seen more to the gray screen yet - problem most likely connected to the bug mentioned in java7. I'll for sure repost here if any gray-outs appear again.
Also since the bug, a new Yosemite build have been released - Beta4, the problem appeared on Beta3, so it might have been tackled in there as well.

OK let's say it has been fixed on Oracle or Apple side, nothing to do in JOSM. Thanks for reporting it still :)

No problem, I'll post here again if anything re-appears but are fairly confident that it is closed. Ticket was also opened on apple-seeds, only didn't open ticket at oracle....

FYI, Java 7u71 and 7u72, which contain the fix for the installation bug, have been released today. Unfortunately, 8u25 does not contain the fix.
