kbl and NM distances refers to maritime distance units cable length and Nautical mile, 1 nautical mile is 1' arc (1/60th of degree arc distance) which equals to 1852 meters. A cable length is a 1/10th of a nautical mile. It makes complete sense to maintain this alongside with SI (meter/kilometre), Imperial (feet/statute mile), and any other commonly used measurements of length used anywhere in the world.

for the record, the bug was that at some point "kbl" somehow was set automatically (i definitely did not change it :) ) - although probably not that important by now

It's possible original reporter accidentally clicked the measurement box in the status bar at the bottom of the screen, which seems to cycle between measurement systems.

Yes, it is likely (as it changed suddenly). IMHO this should be changeable only from "Map settings panel, map projection tab, system of measurement option". This "click measurement box to change" has probably more victims (like me and other people that posted on forum) than users.
It turns out that is is setting in preferences: Map settings panel, map projection tab, system of measurement option. Changing it fixed problem.
I am not sure what caused this setting to change, once I track it down I will reopen the ticket.
