lakewalker hangs trying to remove duplicate nodes with big lakes

When lakewalking big lakes I am oftenly confronted with a hanging lakewalker saying

Removing duplicate nodes...

in his messagebox and showing cryptic

can not split, but too deep: 23 size: nnnn

lines on the console.
