     4This menu allows you to use various sources as a background layer in the [wikitr:/Help/MapView Mapview] such as aerial imagery, cadastral plans or maps rendered from OpenStreetMap data.
    55
    6 The wmsplugin allows you to use various sources as a background layer in the main window.  Clicking on a green WMS menu item will automatically download the image from the server. Servers can be added and edited using the WMSplugin Preference Tab  in the [wiki:Help/Action/Preferences preferences ]. Any new servers or changes would then displayed on the main WMS menu. By default, Landsat and NPE menu items are added.

    8 At present, the Menu has five sections:

    21 For use with Metacarta's [http://labs.metacarta.com/rectifier/ Map Rectifier]. Clicking on this opens up a dialog box requesting an id. The id is obtained from either the page url or the WMS link. (for example,
    22 http://labs.metacarta.com/rectifier/rectify/73 -  the id would be 73)
     60=== Exception occurred - red tiles ===
     61* This can mean the imagery server is temporarily not available. ''Landsat'' and ''OpenAerialMap'' seem to be prone to periods of non-availability. Delete the WMS layer and try again 10 minutes later.

     67* if you have non-ACSII symbols in the path to your plugin folder in Windows (e.g. cyrillic letters in ''your name'' in `C:\Documents and Settings\[your name]\Application Data\JOSM\plugins`), a possible solution is to change ''your name'' to an equivalent short filename. To find this open a command window and do

    30 You can add, edit and delete WMS entries in the WMSplugin Preference Tab - these will then show up in the WMS menu.
    31
    32 You can also do this manually in the Advanced Preferences, using the following schema:
    33 wmsplugin.url.1.name=Landsat
    34 wmsplugin.url.1.url=http://onearth.jpl.nasa.gov....
    35 wmsplugin.url.2.name=NPE Maps... etc

    39
    40 For Metacartas Map Rectifier http://labs.metacarta.com/rectifier/ , you only need to input the relevant 'id'.
    41 To add a Metacarta Map Rectifer menu item, manually create the url like in this example,replacing 73 with your image id:
    42 http://labs.metacarta.com/rectifier/wms.cgi?id=73&srs=EPSG:4326&Service=WMS&Version=1.1.0&Request=GetMap&format=image/png

    44 Note: Make sure the image is suitable, copyright-wise, if in doubt, don't use.

     72In its output the column to the left of ''your name'' should contain short version of ''your name'', let it be for example `9335~1`. Add a line to the batch file starting JOSM:

     80== Caching ==
     81To reuse the tiles over JOSM sessions without having the reload them from the server, right click on the WMS layer and set a bookmark. During the next session, select the new WMS created by the bookmark in the WMS menu. Additionally, you may want to modify the following values in the preferences:
     82* `cache.wmsplugin.expire` to `-1`: this is a time in second until the tiles are invalidated. `-1` means ''never flush''.
     83* `cache.wmsplugin.maxsize` to `999999999`: maximal size of the cache (probably in MB).
     84Even though you have to download an area manually, you can work offline using this technique.

     92Before you start with your own images, it might be a good idea to start with Landsat data so you'll learn how to work with these downloaded images.
     93
     94To work with your own images in JOSM:
     95* upload your aerial image / scanned old map to either

     101 * **Note**: please read their privacy/copyright notes first
     102* rectify it on their site so it ''fits with reality''
     103* XXX - wait for the image to be processed?
     104* remember the metacarta id (look at the URL in your browser)
     105* in JOSM, load some openstreetmap data of the expected image area (to be in the right ''clipping range'')
     106* click on Rectified Image and enter the id in the upcoming dialog
     107
     108If the ''clipping range'' was wrong, you might see just nothing. In this case zoom out and retry the download.
