With the Zoom mode the [wikitr:/Help/MapView Map view] can seamlessly be placed to specific area. Left click and drag a rectangle to zoom the viewport to that rectangle. If the zoom rectangle is drawn from top-left to bottom-right, you are zoomed in. If the zoom rectangle is drawn from bottom-right to top-left, you are zoomed out (since JOSM version 16900).

In all working modes zooming and scrolling the map is possible with:
* Using the mouse scroll wheel – Zoom
* **`+`** or **`Ctrl+,`** – Zoom in
* **`-`** or **`Ctrl+.`** – Zoom out
* drawing a rectangle in the Map view :
  * from top-left to bottom-right – Zoom in
  * from bottom-right to top-left – Zoom out
* Moving the slider top left in the Map view – Zoom
* Several entries in the [wikitr:/Help/Menu/View View menu] - Zoom and scroll
* **`Ctrl+Arrow`** – Scroll the map
* Right click and drag – Scroll the map
