5PageOutline(2-10,Table of Content)
66
7 Download data.BR
8 Different type of data can be downloaded:
     7JOSMImage(download,48,link=,middle,margin-right=20) Keyboard shortcut: **`Ctrl+Shift+↓`**
98
10  * osm data (nodes, ways, relations ...), downloaded from the OpenStreetMap server.
     9**Download map data from a server of your choice.**
1110
12  * gps raw data, downloaded from the OpenStreetMap server.
     11Downloading data with the Download window in JOSM follows these 3 simple steps:
     121. Choose a source server and optional adjust the download options the server offers
     131. Choose an area to download
     141. Click on JOSMImage(download) Download
1315
14 The dialog has multiple tabs. The exact configuration of tabs may be dependent on plugins you have installed, but you will generally at least have:
     16 **Note:** If [ExpertMode Expert mode] is not enabled, the following text is displayed (at the bottom of the window): Use left click & drag to select an area, arrows or right mouse button to scroll the map, scroll wheel or +/- to zoom.\\
     17 Image(UseTo___Zoom.png,600,link=)
1518
16  * Slippy map provides a movable map like on the OSM front page with which you can interactively select the area to download. Only differences are that Shift+Click to zoom is not available, move the map the JOSM way by press and hold the right mouse button and select an area by press and hold the left mouse button.
     19== Source server and server download options ==
     20By default there is only one source, the main OSM server. If [wikitr:/Help/ExpertMode expert mode] is enabled then you have access to other servers too. Each server has its own special download options, which are explained below.
1721
18  * A Bookmarks tab where you can select from your predefined bookmarks, or create a new bookmark from the current bounding box or the area defined in another tab respectively.
     22=== Download from OSM ===#Downloadfromosm
     23Image(Slippy map (macOS).png,link=)
1924
20  * A Bounding Box tab where you can set the latitude/longitude bounds of the data to be downloaded, and also paste an URL from either www.openstreetmap.org or www.informationfreeway.org.
21     *  To paste from the map on the OpenStreetMap site, zoom in to the area you are interested in, then either move the mouse over the "view" tab, and copy the resulting URL, or copy the permalink given in the bottom right corner. Then go to JOSM, and paste this URL into the "URL from www.openstreetmap.org" box. (In Windows to paste into the box, left click within the box, and then do CTRL+v).
22     * To paste from www.informationfreeway.org zoom to the area you are interested in, and then copy the permalink location from the bottom right of screen, and paste as described above.
     25This is the default download method. Different types of data can be downloaded (it is possible to download all three types at once):
2326
24  * On the Places tab you can find the functionality of the former namefinder plugin. Here you can search for specific places, street names, etc, in the OSM database. The server used is currently hardcoded to use the OSM Name finder described in the OSM-Wiki.
     27* [osmwiki:Downloading_data OpenStreetMap data] ([osmwiki:Elements nodes, ways, relations])
     28* [osmwiki:Upload Raw GPS data] (traces)
     29* [wikitr:/Help/Dialog/Notes Notes]
2530
26  * A Tile Numbers tab where you can enter number of tiles and a zoom level to download data of those tiles. This might look a little akward especially when reading how to compute the tile numbers. But sometimes it comes in handy. Have a look at the t@h browser where you can quite easily determine the tile numbers in the image address when hovering the individual tiles with the mouse.
     31There might be a red warning below the data type check boxes displayed if the selected area is probably too large for the server and will be answered with an error message. \\
     32You can download bigger areas using several smaller ones or try another source server.
2733
28 When switching between tabs, the area shown in each tab will be the same. So if you select a bookmark for example and switch to the slippy map tab, the area of that bookmark is shown.
     34=== Download from Overpass API ([wikitr:/Help/ExpertMode expert mode]) ===#DownloadfromOverpassAPI
     35Image(Download from Overpass API (macOS).png,link=)
2936
30 The tabs will also display a warning at the bottom if the selected area is too large for the server and will likely be answered with an error message. (You can try, though!)
     37The big advantage of Download from Overpass API compared to Download from OSM is that you can limit the download to specific objects, rather than "all objects in an area". If you use this download method make sure you know what you are doing, as working with incomplete data sets can lead to relation issues, incorrect or duplicate data, or server conflicts at upload time. [osmwiki:Overpass_API/Sparse_Editing Sparse Editing] explains potential issues.
3138
32 When the download dialog is called up with data already loaded, all fields are set to the currently visible bounding box. Thus a common use scenario is to first load your GPS track from a GPX file, then zoom the view so that the portion you wish to work on is fully visible, and then call up the download dialog which will reflect the visible area.
     39Overpass API offers download of OpenStreetMap data elements only (i.e. no gps traces or notes).
     40
     41To use Download from Overpass API put your Overpass query in the big text box. See [osmwiki:Overpass_API/Overpass_QL Overpass QL] for its syntax. [osmwiki:Overpass_turbo/Extended_Overpass_Turbo_Queries Extended Overpass Turbo Queries] are allowed. You can add, edit and delete your favorite queries in the list on the right side. Successful executed queries will automatically be added to the list with "history" and the time and date as name of this query. Type text in the small textbox above the list to filter the list.
     42
     43If `geocodeArea` is part of the query, it will be evaluated. If `bbox` is part of the query, then you need to choose the area to download (see below). If none of them is present, then it will search and download global. If the query box is left blank you can download all the data in the below specified area to download.
     44
     45JOSM silently autofixes some errors of the query (e.g. replaces `out:json` with `out:xml` or replaces `out:body` with `out:meta`), similar to the autofix function of the overpass turbo website.
     46
     47The Query Wizard that uses JOSM [wikitr:/Help/Action/Search search] syntax helps you to create an Overpass Turbo query.
     48
     49In the favorite editing window the first box contains the name and the box below the query.
     50

     53=== Download from Sophox API ([wikitr:/Help/ExpertMode expert mode]) ===#DownloadfromSophoxAPI
     54Image(Download from Sophox API (macOS).png,link=)
     55
     56Similar to Download from Overpass API this download method uses special queries to limit the downloaded data. It has the same features to store your favorite queries.
     57
     58The usage of the Download from Sophox API is explained in the [osmwiki:Wikidata%2BOSM_SPARQL_query_service osm wiki]. To use this download method you need to install the [wikitr:/Help/Plugin/Wikipedia Wikipedia Plugin].
     59
     60=== Download from MapWithAI API ===
     61This requires the plugin [wikitr:/Help/Plugin/MapWithAI MapWithAI].
     62
     63
     64== Area to download ==
     65Additional to the server choose you need to select in which area ("bounding box", "bbox") you want to download the data (except for special Overpass or Sophox queries). The area to download can be chosen in different tabs.
     66
     67The Slippy map tab is the most intuitive one as you can simply draw a bbox rectangle with your mouse on the map. If you change the bbox in another tab and go back to the Slippy map it will display the new bbox, so you can adjust it before downloading. When the download dialog is called up with data already loaded, the bbox of the downloaded window will be the same like your current [wikitr:/Help/MapView map view].
     68
     69=== Slippy map ===#Slippymap
     70Image(Slippy map (macOS).png,400,link=)
     71
     72The Slippy map provides a movable map like on the OSM front page with which you can interactively select the area to download. Move the map the JOSM way by press and hold the right mouse button and select an area by press and hold the left mouse button.
     73
     74Clicking on the JOSMImage(dialogs/layerlist) button on the upper right gives you the option to change the displayed map for this window. The available maps are based on your [wikitr:/Help/Preferences/Imagery Imagery preferences].
     75
     76=== Bookmarks ===
     77Image(Bookmarks (macOS).png,400)
     78
     79In the Bookmarks tab you can select from your predefined bookmarks, or create a new bookmark from the current bounding box (bbox) or the area defined in another tab respectively.
     80
     81There are special bookmarks, which can't be modified directly:
     82* The Home location bookmark represents the home location, which you have set in your osm profile on osm.org.
     83* With the JOSMImage(dialogs/changeset/downloadchangeset) button on the left you can download the bboxes of you last 15 changesets, which are added as bookmarks then.
     84
     85Double click on a bookmark to directly download the related bbox or single click on a bookmark, switch to the Slippy map tab and adjust the bbox before downloading.
     86
     87=== Bounding Box ===
     88Image(Bounding box (macOS).png,400,link=)
     89
     90In the Bounding Box tab you can set the latitude/longitude bounds of the data to be downloaded, and also paste an URL from either www.openstreetmap.org or www.informationfreeway.org.
     91* To paste from [osmwww: the map] on the OpenStreetMap site, zoom into the area you are interested in and copy the URL from the address bar of your browser. Then go to JOSM, and paste this URL into the "URL from www.openstreetmap.org" box. (In Windows to paste into the box, left click on the box, and then do `Ctrl+V`).
     92* To paste from www.informationfreeway.org zoom to the area you are interested in, and then copy the permalink location from the bottom right of the screen, and paste as described above.
     93
     94Instead of pasting the URL in the text box, you can press `Ctrl+V` on any other tab to parse the bounds from the clipboard URL.
     95
     96You can copy bounds to clipboard with the Copy bound button
     97
     98=== Area around places ===
     99Image(Areas around places (macOS).png,400,link=)
     100
     101On the Area around places tab you can search for specific places, street names, etc, in the OSM database. Currently, there is only one server for the search available: [osmwiki:Nominatim Nominatim]. If there are more than 10 results, only 10 results are displayed and the button changes to "Search more...". \\
     102After you have clicked on a search result you can switch back to the Slippy map tab (which has zoomed to the area of the search result) and adjust the bounding box.
     103
     104=== Tile Numbers ===
     105Image(Tile numbers (macOS).png,400,link=)
     106
     107In the Tile Numbers tab you can enter a number of tiles and a zoom level to download data of those tiles. Alternatively, you enter a Tile address. This might look a little awkward, especially when reading [osmwiki:Slippy_map_tilenames how to compute the tile numbers]. But sometimes it comes in handy. If you want to easily determine the tile numbers with the mouse, see this help center question.
     108
     109
     110== JOSM download options ==
     111JOSM offers some general options of this download window:
     112 Open this dialog on startup::
     113  If checked this window will automatically be opened after the start of JOSM.
     114 Zoom to downloaded data::
     115  If checked the map view will move to the downloaded data after downloading, if not checked it will stay at its current position. (If [wikitr:/Help/ExpertMode expert mode] is off this checkbox is not displayed.)
     116
     117By default the "Download" button should be used. If you want to download data to a separate [wikitr:/Help/Dialog/LayerList Data Layer] use the "Download as new layer" button. (If there isn't any data layer yet, this option is not available.)
