    11MapPaint style switcher (View menu) is inactive (greyed out) if there is no data layer although a style influences the display.

    3 The background color is depending on the last selected style (Potlatch white, JOSM black) but cannot be changed unless you create or load a data layer. That is if relevance if you display gpx traces (on top of a half transparent mapnik layer).
