#24138 new defect

The ^ character appears unexpectedly in dialog boxes — at Version 8

Description (last modified by GerdP)

What steps will reproduce the problem?

No idea how exactly this can be reproduced, but I see it very often while editing and it is anoying.
Here is a list of steps that shows the error very often:

  1. Start JOSM (with a clean installation) on a system in Germany
  2. Open image layer BING
  3. Open another image layer like Esri
  4. Create new (empty) data layer
  5. Press ^-Key once to reorder the image layers (which works well)
  6. Press Ctrl+F to open the search dialog
  7. Press A-Key to start a search for something starting with "a".

What is the expected result?

Search input field contains character "a"

What happens instead?

Often (not always) the input field is filled with â

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if possible.

I'll try to add more details once this happens again. I assume that there is a race condition so that sometimes the short cut to switch between layers is not processed quick enough and instead is interpreted as input.

I still don't know how to reproduce, but I can add that the ^ Key also appears in other dialog boxes like "File Save As" or the preferences dialog.
The problem occurs also with a freshly started JOSM instance.
I tried to reconfigure the short cut to the 1 Key, but then the action was triggered by but the ^ Key and the 1 Key.
Very strange!

It never happened to me. You could try to reset the preferences, maybe it makes a difference.

I've just reproduced it with a freshly started JOSM r19307 with an empty home dir (-Djosm.home=) and it occured with the first dialog box but not again and I am not able to reproduce. Maybe it is something special with Windows or my java version or my keyboard.

I don't know if it's related, but just observed a weird behaviour with layer switching. My bind key is 0 and if I press it a 5-10 times after some editing, JOSM occasionally switching twice for a single press. It would align with the race condition theory IMO.

Could be HW issue as well, but I would be surprised, since it's a good quality mechanical keyboard and I have never had any issue in other SW.

It might also be an error on my side. Maybe I pressed the ^ Key by accident when I wanted to press ESC

Since nobody else seems to have this problem it is more likely a problem before the screen ;)

comment:7 by GerdP, 2 months ago

Maybe my configuration is special, I use a german keyboard but JOSM language is set to english.
