In order to map natural=peak, add place=locality and adjust lakes,
displaying SRTM data in a separate background layer similar to WMS layers
can be very useful.
Thus a plugin simplifying downloading and drawing elevation contours in JOSM will be a nice enhancement.

There is a temporary solution: Choosing OpenCycleMap from the WMS presets. This map includes SRTM data.

I could use this plugin sometime, too.
Would be a major tool to map in areas with hills, mountains and canyons/valleys.

It would be great, but it need help of someone who worked with SRTM.

Maybe good idea to join with http://socghop.appspot.com/student_project/show/google/gsoc2009/openstreetmap/t124023144170. I Suggest plugin into JOSM too but on this basis:
GPX file have altitude tag too, why not to use this, when some tracks are loaded into OSM DB and you can load your own.
